POLITICAL COMMITTEE FORMS TO SUPPORT ELECTION UPDATES PROPOSED FOR THE NOVEMBER ELECTION IN POLK COUNTY

Lakeland, FL - Today, a local group of community leaders, local businesses, trade and agriculture groups filed to form a political committee.  The committee called "Polk Citizens for Good Government" came together to support three proposed county charter amendments that were placed on the ballot recently by the Polk County Commission.

Last month, the County Commission put one charter amendment on the ballot that will require all future elections on issues to be on the ballot during a regular general election.  This will save the potential for special elections and would save taxpayers hundreds of thousands in costly countywide special elections.  The other two charter amendments are to require a 60% voter approval on all future charter amendments or new ordinances that require voter approval.  The current rule requires 50% plus 1 vote for passage.

The new political committee was formed to help promote these three amendments by educating voters of their benefits and advocating for support this November.  Polk Citizens for Good Government will be chaired by Victor Story, who is the immediate past president of the Polk County Farm Bureau and Area Vice President of the Florida Citrus Mutual.  Victor will serve as the spokesperson for the newly formed committee and is joined by Sam Killebrew who will serve as Treasurer.  Sam has served as the Director of the East Polk County Committee of 100 and volunteers in various other local organizations.

Over the next two months, the committee will campaign across Polk County and communicate with voters to ask them to support the three charter changes.  These changes will help to protect the Polk County Charter, update election rules and save taxpayers from having to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on costly special elections.

Citizens or local businesses can join Polk Citizens for Good Government to help them expand their base of support or to volunteer and help.  Membership in the group is free.
